No Pass, No Start: Alcohol Detection Before Every Bus Trip

How a breath alcohol tester linked to vehicle control helps bus operators make every trip start with a sober, accountable driver.

Under India’s Motor Vehicles Act, driving with more than 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, as detected by a breath analyser, is an offence. For a bus operator, a single incident can cost lives and reputations built over decades. An in-vehicle alcohol tester turns a policy on paper into a check that happens before every trip.

How the test works

  1. The driver takes their seat and picks up the breath tester mounted on the dashboard.
  2. They blow into the mouthpiece for a few seconds.
  3. The device measures the sample and shows a clear pass or fail.
  4. The result is sent to the vehicle-control integration and logged to the trip record.

Pass or fail

If the test passes, engine-start authorisation is enabled and the trip begins as normal. If alcohol is detected above the configured threshold, start authorisation stays blocked and an alert is sent to the fleet operator with the time, vehicle and driver.

Why integration matters

A tester that only displays a result relies on goodwill. Linking it to vehicle control and to the fleet platform creates accountability: every trip has a logged test, and every failure is visible to the people responsible for safety. Engine-start interlocking is a vehicle-specific integration and must be validated for each vehicle model before use.

Rolling it out with drivers

Drivers should understand that the system protects them as much as passengers. Explain the process, run a trial period, and agree what happens after a failed test before going live.
